Alton

Alton, at the centre of 'Jane Austen Country' and of 200 square miles of beautiful countryside, and with more than 1000 rights of way, the area is an ideal centre for town, country and pub walks and rides. Alton is a friendly market town, with a fascinating history, the market was the most valuable in the Doomsday Book, and it is still held every Tuesday in the High Street. The Saxon 'Alton Buckle' is just one of the historical artifacts in the Curtis Museum.

The 11th Century Church of St Lawrence bears the scars of the 17th century civil war 'Battle of Alton' fought between 5000 Parliamentarians and 2000 Royalist defenders who fought to the death in the town. Visit Jane Austen's house in Chawton, which is a comfortable walk from Alton's Market Square as is the grave of 'Sweet Fanny Adams' infamously murdered in the 19th century. Ride on the Watercress Line restored steam railway which runs between Alton's Rail Centre and Alresford through 16 miles beautiful countryside.

Today, Alton's many listed buildings jostle with modern shops, delightful public gardens and play areas to host a variety of markets, fairs and traditional countryside events throughout the year.
