Arundel
Arundel is an old community and traces of a Roman villa can still be found.
One of the striking features of the town is the castle, the foundation stone of which was laid on Christmas Day, 1066. It is believed to be the first stone castle to have been built in Britain. Currently the Castle is the seat of Edward, Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England, and is a major tourist attraction together with the town’s other imposing building, the Catholic Cathedral. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust also has a site on the eastern edge of the town, and these attractions combine to make tourism a significant part of the economy.
Today Arundel has a reputation for antiques, and has a large number of establishments for eating. Arundel.org is a dedicated website detailing all the activities in the town.
The parish is on a North/South axis, and is divided centrally by the A27, with that part of the parish to the South being a dormitory area.
The Arundel Community Partnership carried out a Health Check, and following extensive consultation with all sections of the community, produced a Community Plan. The wishes of the residents were revealed by a consultation process, and some are now being addressed. The Lottery fund made a grant to enable a Design statement to be produced, which has been accepted by the planning authority as a material planning consideration.
2009/10 has seen the installation of public mooring pontoons on Town Quay, renewal of fingerposts around the town, creation of new town maps and the installation of information boards to tempt tourists to walk around the town, and thus past the shops.
Their current project is to employ a PR company to promote Arundel and it's new destination brand to help counter the reduction in the average spend of visitors. This project is funded by the Three Harbours and Coastal Plain LEADER programme.
