Battle
Battle is, of course, famed as the historic site of the Battle of Hastings from which it derives its name, and for the Abbey that was established by King William I in thanksgiving for his victory. The settlement that grew around the Abbey has developed in ribbon-style along the ridge which bears the main road through the town, and the urban area of Battle is constrained by both the topography of the area and by the fact that the surrounding countryside forms part of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
