Haddenham

The Village, now with over 5000 residents, still retains a village atmosphere. Thanks to its history as the home of the Aylesbury Duck, it still has four ponds and the largest in front of the Church and village Green is still home to some of these white birds. It is also well known as one of only three villages with witchert walls, houses and barns. Witchert is the local name for earth walling. On a plinth of rubblestone, the local subsoil, wetted and mixed with chopped straw is built up in two foot layers to the required height. The walls are then topped with tiles.
The village is very active with over 100 clubs and societies serving a wide variety of interests and sporting activities. The village hall provides facilities for young and old as well a venue for special events and there are playing fields with a public playground and the Tennis Club. For village hall bookings call Sue Parkinson on 01844-291276. There are 4 churches, two infant schools, one junior school, and pre-school facilities: a library, a busy health centre, a dentist and a vets. Shops include a chemist, one butcher, a baker's, a fish & chip shop, a convenience store, a mini market, a greengrocers, a newsagent, a post office, an off-licence, a giftware and furniture shop, a picture gallery/shop, a betting shop, two hairdressers and an estate agent.
